Artist Biography

John Mano, a native of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, living now in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, was born in 1949. John graduated from Hussian School of Art as an illustrator and painter. Over the years, the artist has evolved into a three-dimensional sculptor of paper mache'. Paper Mache' Sculpture is an extremely versatile medium, consisting of paper towels and liquid starch. Using these items, various textures and dimensions are formed by applying layers of paper soaked in starch over a cardboard foundation. The use of color and everyday objects creates a realistic quality, making each sculpture a one of a kind.

"Through my oil painting and illustrations, I found I needed to expand into other areas to express ideas that were beyond the scope of painting -- a transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional -- to express my concepts more accurately. After a period of frustration as I experimented with paper mache’, I became more comfortable with the medium which enabled me to express my true nature as an artist. Each sculpture is taken from an actual object – its size, height, width and depth. I distort my work, giving each piece its own caricature and life – turning it into not just a reproduction, but a work of art."

John has had one man shows in Ardmore and Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. A number of his pieces are privately owned.
