Lois Allen Charles
creates story-telling scenes reflecting
her interest in American historical culture.
She was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. Her family
ancestors have lived and worked as shoemakers, button makers and hat makers in
Philadelphia since 1803.
Lois enjoys painting Philadelphia street scenes of an earlier time.
She refers to many old photographs to reflect the businesses, streets signs,
shop prices, dress of everyday people, vehicles and buildings of the time in her
collage style of painting. She always includes herself in her Philadelphia
paintings as the woman carrying the basket of laundry (she has three children!)
Recently she had the honor of painting the historic King of Prussia
Inn at the request of the King of Prussia Chamber of Commerce, to raise funding
for the Inn's move and restoration.
The artist works in acrylic, watercolor and pastels or in
combinations of these mediums. She will spend many months working on a painting
to achieve the fine miniaturized detail she is known for.
Her artwork has been in numerous shows and has won various awards
as well as being in many public and private collections.
In her painting, Lois hopes the viewer will find joy in her
stylized reconstruction of the past bringing to mind a simpler time in American
life. |
