STATEMENT OF FRIENDS (QUAKERS)
IN RESPONSE TO
THE THREAT OF WAR WITH IRAQ
We, the undersigned, are individual Friends (Quakers) living in the Main Line area who are deeply concerned about the threat of war with Iraq.
NO MORE VICTIMS
We share with all Americans and people everywhere our shock, horror and profound sadness following the terrible events of September 11, 2001. Our heartfelt grief goes out to the families of those lost. While there is no question that those responsible for these attacks must be brought to justice, the pursuit of this justice must not put innocent lives at risk. Justice must be sought in a spirit of civility and cooperation so that it may engender good will from people of all countries and religious traditions.
WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER
Today, the United States government stands on the verge of launching a major war against Iraq. It is even feared that we are on the eve of a new and terrible global war that will bring immense suffering for many peoples. Our leaders are promoting a doctrine that asserts America’s right to attack any nation or group perceived as a threat to U.S. security. We call upon our political leaders to abandon this idea and implement multilateral, diplomatic responses to the threats posed by the government of Iraq, and continue to develop nonviolent approaches to resolving international conflicts.
THERE IS NO WAY TO PEACE, PEACE IS THE WAY
War is not the answer. It will never bring lasting peace. It will only perpetuate a cycle of violence that will create untold suffering for thousands of innocent people and their children. It is time to articulate a new vision of a peaceful world that does not rely on military force to solve problems. For over 300 years Quakers have witnessed against political violence as contrary to the spirit of Christ and the teachings of Jesus. Divine love has the power to stop the cycle of violence; only peaceful actions create peace. We believe that there is a Divine Seed in all people, a Light that has the ability turn men and women away from evil.
Our prayers for peace go out to all people everywhere and especially to all those who carry the responsibility for guiding our nation during this crucial time.
